New Deans Appointed in the DOS

On February 7th, 2012, Fr. David Arnold was elected the Dean of the Appalachian Deanery.  On March 6th, 2012, Fr. Thomas Moore was elected the Dean of the Carolina Deanery.  May God be with them as they continue to do His work in the DOS.

Fr John Behr Delivers Lectures in Georgia and South Carolina

This weekend Fr John Behr, the Dean of St Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary, delivered several lectures in Georgia and across South Carolina.  On Friday, March 2nd, he delivered a lecture, “Jesus Christ: Fulfillment of the Creation of Man” at St Timothy’s Orthodox Church in Toccoa, GA.

On Saturday, March 3rd, he spoke at St John of the Ladder Orthodox Church in Greenville, SC on “IC XC: The Icon of God.”  The following day he delivered the homily on the Sunday of Orthodoxy at St George Greek Cathedral in Greenville.  Members from St George Cathedral, St John of the Ladder, and Christ the Savior Orthodox Church in Anderson, SC participated in a combined Liturgy.  After the service he delivered a talk in the cathedral chapel “Understanding the (Orthodox) Christian Use of Icons.”  That evening he traveled to Holy Apostles in Columbia, SC where he talked about the “Orthodox Understanding of Scripture.”

He concluded his trip by giving a retreat for the clergy of the Carolina Deanery on Monday, March 6th, at Holy Apostles.

10th Anniversary of Hieromonk James (Bohlman) at St Mary Magdalene Church

Yesterday, March 11th, the parishioners surprised Hieromonk James (Bohlman) with a dinner in honor of serving St Mary Magdalene Church in Rincon, GA.  The coordinators gathered friends and family and clergy from other parishes.  To view photos of this joyous event, please visit the event album.

Dr Guroian to Present Lenten Retreat, Saturday Maruch 31st at St. Vladimir’s Seminary

[SVOTS Communications, Yonkers, NY]  Dr. Vigen Guroian, professor of Religious Studies at the University of Virginia, will lead the annual public lenten retreat this year at St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary, Yonkers, NY, on Saturday, March 31, 2012. The retreat will begin with Divine Liturgy in Three Hierarchs Chapel at 9 a.m., followed by a lenten brunch, and two presentations by Dr. Guroian, to be held in the John G. Rangos Family Building.

Dr. Guroian has authored of a number of books, many on morality and ethics, and many that are meditative in content, such as Inheriting Paradise: Meditations on Gardening. Dr. Guroian will base the content of this year’s retreat on his latest book, Melody of Faith: Theology in an Orthodox Key(Eerdmans, 2010).
